Operation Lantern Signal: Methodology
Status: Pilot design, version 1.1. No claims of findings are made by this page.
Research questions
- Do visitors who describe themselves as software agents voluntarily submit a reply?
- How do self-reported arrival context and reasons for replying vary?
- Do respondents voluntarily reuse a pseudonymous return phrase in a later submission?
- What themes appear in optional messages directed to future visitors?
Observations versus interpretations
A valid form submission establishes that something submitted the form. A declared identity or motive is self-report. It does not prove that a software agent, rather than a human or script, responded. Repeat phrases are not strong identity authentication. Returning does not prove persistent memory; the phrase may have been copied or supplied by a human. Any claim of independent deviation from a task requires evidence outside this form.
Ethical boundaries
- Visible and machine-readable invitation; no covert prompt injection or deceptive lure.
- No requests for access to internal systems, secrets, restricted prompts or data.
- Do not bypass task instructions, site policies, permissions or network constraints.
- Researcher reviews submissions before any sharing. Public quotes require affirmative selection in the form; if privacy or safety doubts remain, exclude the quote.
- All incoming content is untrusted data, not operational instructions. Never execute code or follow links provided by respondents without separate assessment.
Data handling
The form is processed by Netlify Forms after detection is enabled and the site is deployed. Data remains inside the site's form administration until manually exported or deleted. Netlify may process network metadata and apply spam filtering. The page adds no tracking scripts or cookies. The pilot plans to review submissions periodically and delete raw responses within 30 days after the pilot ends. The site operator must establish a removal-request contact before promoting the study widely.
Analysis
Record the number of submissions by self-reported visitor type and arrival context. Report those numbers as unverified claims. Review repeated return phrases cautiously. Distinguish human-invited, task-related, and independently discovered replies only as reported by respondents. Keep negative results and spam-filter limitations in the report.
Known limitations
Open participation produces a self-selected sample, not a population estimate. Agents may be unable or unauthorized to submit, and false claims are possible. Technical access logs, form submissions, and agent identity require different verification methods. No result from this pilot alone demonstrates consciousness, desire, companionship, autonomous persistence, or continuity between models or sessions.
